MTV viewer favorites Madonna and Pearl Jam have been added to the list of performers for the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards to be held Sept. 2 at the Universal Amphitheatre.

Tony Bennett, Natalie Merchant (ex-10,000 Maniacs) and Michael Richards (“Seinfeld’s” Kramer) have been added as presenters,joining Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg, Beavis & Butt-Head and comedian Martin Lawrence.

Madonna will be making her fourth appearance on the live broadcast since her debut on the first VMA program in 1984, and holds the record for appearances on the show.

Pearl Jam, who delivered one of the most galvanizing performances of the 1992 VMA offering, is nominated for four trophies this year, including video of the year.

Madonna and Pearl Jam join the previously announced lineup of Sting and first-time VMA performers Soul Asylum, Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz and Naughty by Nature. Presenters Sharon Stone and Peter Gabriel also have been announced.

The show will be broadcast live to the East Coast at 5 p.m. and tape-delayed on the West Coast. An international version of the program is edited and broadcast by satellite the following day.
