EMI Music Publishing Worldwide yesterday tapped John Sykes as its executive VP, talent acquisition and marketing, a rise from his former job as executive VP , creative operations, for EMI’s U.S. music publishing operation.
Sykes, one of the founders of MTV, joined EMI in 1992 from Chrysalis Records, where he was president of the label’s North American operations.
He is a former prexy of Champion Entertainment and was a film and music agent at Creative Artists Agency.
During the past year, Sykes has been involved in the EMI publishing signings of Jermaine Dupri of Kris Kross, Danzig, Arrested Development, GangStarr and others. He also spearheaded marketing efforts on Shakespear’s Sister, Simply Red and Jude Cole.
Sykes will now work with both EMI Music and Virgin to sign talent and develop marketing strategies. He will continue to report to EMI chairman/CEO Martin Bandier.
