Sam’s family is a little concerned about this dog because they can’t see her. Only when his children really think he’s gone off the deep end does the dog make herself visible to them, redeeming Sam’s reputation and eventually saving his life.

Under Glenn Jordan’s fine direction, Cronyn gives a superb performance, eschewing sentimentality for heartfelt emotion. Unfortunately, Tandy doesn’t get much screen time, but she is a pleasure to watch when she is around. The strength of Cora and Sam’s relationship is the story’s linchpin, and the way it is written and acted makes the film work.

Editing and camerawork are particularly good, and supporting cast is fine.
