“Cats” in 1993 is a revelation on several counts. Most important, after 11 years the show is in astonishingly good shape.
This has partly to do with its ability to attract first-rate talent despite the near-anonymity of becoming a singing, dancing feline.
Thus, the current production sports Liz Callaway as Grizabella — unquestionably among the best to have played the role — and New York City Ballet dancer Gen Horiuchi, a knockout in the showcase role of Mistoffolees. Kudos also to dance supervisor Richard Stafford, dance captain Suzanne Viverito and production supervisor Bruce Hoover for keeping the show in top form.
Show is also instructive as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard” wends its way across the pond: Musical motifs from “Cats” (as well as “Phantom of the Opera” and other more recent Lloyd Webber works) have clearly found their way into the new show.
