WB’s ‘Bodyguard’ boffo Down Under

Warner Bros.’ “The Bodyguard” biffed the box office in Oz last weekend, with a 123-screen record opening of $ A2,817,383 ($ 1,906,805).

The Kevin Costner-Whitney Houston starrer survived indifferent critical response, and soundtrack is also hot.

Columbia TriStar’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” seems to be running out of blood.

The Francis Ford Coppola pic had hauled in $ 1,368,749 for its first weekend, but by the third midsummer weekend had dropped 48% to third place with $ 423,093 .

“Sister Act” (Touchstone) moved up a slot to No. 2, with a per-screen average of $ 4,106 on 109 ($ 447,561 gross).

“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” dropped from second to fourth with $ 400,159 (off 36%).

“Rapid Fire” (Fox) opened at No. 6 with $ 197,703 from 57 sites.

Total B.O. for the weekend was $ 4,438,051, up 15% over previous period, largely due to boffo “Bodyguard” business.
