Fred Dalton Thompson, a lawyer who portrays the White House chief of staff in the film “In the Line of Fire,” wants a new job: Al Gore’s former Senate seat.
The 50-year-old Republican said Wednesday he had filed documents that will allow him to raise money toward a campaign for the 1994 election.
He said he would make a formal announcement early next year.
The Tennessee seat has been held by Harlan Mathews since Gore was elected VP. Whoever wins the November 1994 election will have two years left on Gore’s six-year term.
It would be Thompson’s first political race. He was counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee when he asked a former White House official whether a taping system was in use prompting the investigation that eventually resulted in President Nixon’s resignation.
He portrayed himself in his first movie “Marie,” and has had supporting roles in more than a dozen movies, including “The Hunt for Red October” and “Die Hard 2.”
