Sony Pictures Classics has moved into the arena of worldwide acquisitions with its $ 1.9 million purchase of Swedish pic “The Slingshot.”
The acquisition represents a benchmark for SPC, which primarily has been known as a distributor of specialized films in North America.
The company is touting the venture as an example of its unified marketing-distribution approach: SPC will devise the overall marketing strategy for the film in North America and work with sister entity Columbia TriStar Intl. on the overseas distribution.
SPC execs wouldn’t confirm the acquisition figure, although sources place it at $ 1.9 million.
The deal was concluded with “Slingshot” producers AB Svensk Filmindustri and Nordisk Film & TV A/S.
Entitled “Kadisbellan” in Swedish, pic was written and directed by Ake Sandgren and was based on the autobiographical novel by Roland Schutt.
