‘Snapper’ tops as most exclusives take major hit

The trend was downward on the Los Angeles-New York exclusives roster, with quite a few pix taking big falls. Even Miramax’s popular “Like Water for Chocolate” took some hits, as did, to one extent or another, just about every other entry on the list. The majors seem to be taking a toll.

The following is a list of weekend grosses for films released on an exclusive basis in New York and Los Angeles.

Los Angeles

“The Snapper” (Miramax) opened strong at the AMC Century 14 to $ 7,196, the Laemmle Sunset 5 to $ 7,710 and the Landmark NuWilshire to $ 9,397.

“Sex and Zen” (Rim Film) was down 18% to $ 2,846 in its fourth at the Los Feliz and 20% to $ 3,996 in its 17th at the Laemmle Monica.

“The War Room” (October) was off 43% to $ 3,704 in its third at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and 47% to $ 3,045 in its third at the Laemmle Monica.

“Jamon Jamon” (Academy) was off44% to $ 5,558 in its sixth at the Laemmle Royal.

“The Wedding Banquet” (Samuel Goldwyn) was down 21% to $ 3,496 in its 18th at the Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

“Sofie” (Arrow Releasing) fell 38% to $ 3,284 in its fifth at the Laemmle Music Hall.

“Boys’ Shorts” (Frameline) dropped 50% to $ 3,035 in its second at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

“A Better Tomorrow” (Rim Film Distributors) fell 46% to $ 2,923 in its second at the Laemmle Monica.

“Like Water for Chocolate” (Miramax) down 62% to $ 1,412 in its third at the Landmark NuWilshire.

“The Saint of Fort Washington” (Warner Bros.) was down 71% to $ 1,274 in its third at the AMC Century 14.

“King of the Hill” (Gramercy) dropped 47% to $ 918 in its second at the Los Feliz.

“The Ice Runner” (Monarch) plummeted 239% to $ 509 in its second weekend at the United Artists Westwood.

New York

“The Snapper” dropped 18% to $ 17,977 in its second at Lincoln Plaza and debuted at the Angelika to $ 14,720.

“The War Room” was off 15% to $ 6,867 in its second at the Cineplex Carnegie Hall and 28% to $ 7,442 in its fifth at the Film Forum.

“The Trial” (Angelika) dropped 26% to $ 11,036 in its second at the Angelika.

“The Wedding Banquet” was off 31% to $ 3,586 in its ninth at the Cineplex Odeon Cinema 3 and 28% to $ 5,834 in its 18th at the Angelika.

“Like Water for Chocolate” was down 21% to $ 4,350 in its 42nd at the Cineplex Carnegie Hall and 22% to $ 4,650 in its fifth at the Quad.

“Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation ’93” debuted to $ 8,465 at the Cinema Village.

“The Saint of Fort Washington” fell 24% to $ 5,489 in its third at the Loews New York Twin.

“Household Saints” (Fine Line) fell 39% to $ 3,883 in its 12th at the Angelika.

“Jamon Jamon” was down 21% to $ 3,606 in its fifth at the Quad.

“Baraka” (Samuel Goldwyn) off 36% to $ 2,741 in its second at the Quad.

“Into the West” (Miramax) was down 43% to $ 1,597 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon Worldwide.
