‘Piano’ scores with Oz crix

Australian film critics have voted “The Piano” best Oz film of 1993, and “Reservoir Dogs” best non-Australian (English-language) pic.

“The Piano” also garnered awards for Jane Campion’s direction, her screenplay (tied with Bob Ellis’ “The Nostradamus Kid”), musical score (Michael Nyman) and supporting actress (Anna Paquin).

Awards were presented Wednesday at the Film Critics Circle of Australia annual dinner. “The Piano” producer Jan Chapman accepted the awards.

“The Story of Qiu Ju” was named best foreign-language pic.

Noah Taylor nabbed best actor and Claudia Karvan best actress, both for “Nostradamus Kid,” Ellis’ autobiographical tale of growing up in an innocent age.

Aboriginal actor David Ngoombujurra was voted best supporting actor for “Blackfellas.” The cinematography award went to Eduardo Serra for “Map of the Human Heart.”
