Quebec comedy “La Florida” has won the Golden Reel Award as the top-grossing Canadian movie of the past year, it was announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.

Directed by Montreal helmer George Mihalka, the French-lingo pic grossed $ C1 .6 million ($ 1.2 million) at the Quebec B.O.

“La Florida” is set to make its premiere in English-speaking Canada in January.

Produced by Les Productions Pierre Sarrazin and Les Films Vision 4, the film is distributed by Alliance Releasing.

“La Florida” tells the story of a Quebec family who make the trek south one winter to Hollywood Beach, Fla., to follow one man’s dream of running a small motel.

The Golden Reel Award will be handed out at this year’s Genie Awards — Canada’s equivalent of the Oscars — which take place in Montreal Dec. 12. “La Florida” is nominated for eight Genies, including best picture.
