In its first foreign outing, Paramount’s “Indecent Proposal” bagged a socko $ 1.321 million in the first five days on 116 screens in Australia.
Adding in paid previews, the total was $ 2.137 million, which made it the biggest April opening ever Down Under, according to United Intl. Pictures.
Distrib was especially encouraged by the Monday gross of $ 114,956, achieved despite a televised state-of-origin rugby match (akin to the Super Bowl).
UIP has booked a raft of May dates for Adrian Lyne’s pic in markets including Italy, France, the U.K., Germany and Japan.
Distrib aims to capitalize on U.S. publicity, which has been widely picked up by local media. May in Europe is also relatively uncrowded with major releases.
“May can be tricky but we decided to go as early as we could to strike while the iron is hot,” said UIP senior VP marketing Hy Smith.
