Columbia’s “Last Action Hero” is off to a fast start in its initial foreign dates. The fantasy-adventure has debuted in the Far East in Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore and in South Africa.
Cumulatively, those territories have generated approximately $ 4.5 million.
In several instances the initial exploitation has set box office records. In Thailand opening weekend figures set new highs for the territory and it was Columbia TriStar’s best ever launch in Taiwan.
Columbia TriStar Intl. prexy Ted Shugrue noted that it was company policy to open high profile films in Far East territories as early as possible because of piracy.
The individual country totals are: $ 527,127 in Thailand in 10 days; $ 1.3 million in Taiwan after 17 days; $ 595,464 in Hong Kong in four days; $ 683,881 in the Philippines in the first 10 days; $ 240,000 after four days in Singapore; and $ 417,956 in 10 days in South Africa.
