Gibson tapped NATO top male

Mel Gibson has been chosen to receive NATO/ShoWest’s Male Star of the Year award, during the March 11 final-night awards banquet at Bally’s Hotel & Casino.

Gibson comes off a year in which he appeared in Warner Bros.’ hits “Lethal Weapon 3” and “Forever Young.” The pix grossed more than $ 200 million at the domestic theatrical box office in 1992.

Gibson made his debut in the low-budget Australian actioner “Mad Max,” and his studio debut in the 1984 pic “The River.” Other pix have included “Tim, “”Mrs. Soffel,” the three “Lethal Weapon” films, “Tequila Sunrise,””Bird on a Wire” and “Hamlet.”

Gibson’s directorial debut, Warner Bros.’ “Man Without a Face,” is slated for fall release.
