Berndt trying to withdraw from deal to privatize Defa

Hans-Joachim Berndt wants out of his deal with media authority the Treuhand to buy out and privatize the former Defa studios outside of Berlin.

Berndt, whose Munich-based Filmhaus is Germany’s largest producer of commercials, has asked the Treuhand to dissolve the deal.

Berndt had planned to transfer a substantial part of his operations to the Berlin region.

Rumors surrounding the deal have abounded in recent weeks: Berndt reportedly failed to make scheduled payments and clashed bitterly with Dokfilm workers.

He told a Berlin paper that “financial problems” had surfaced recently.

Docu work

The facility is one of Europe’s largest facilities for documentary production.

Under the former East German regime, it was linked to the Defa Studios (now Studio Babelsberg). Berndt had also bid to take over that facility.

There’s no new buyer in sight.
