‘Aladdin’ rides high

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures across much of Europe didn’t deter more than a million people from flocking to “Aladdin” as its overseas cume soared to $ 100 million.

The animated pic set opening records for Disney in Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Berlin and had bewitching preems in London and Austria.

Among the holdovers, “Jurassic Park” has amassed $ 517.4 million internationally, “The Fugitive” has $ 158.4 million, “The Firm”$ 85.2 million, “Last Action Hero”$ 77.8 million, “Sliver”$ 72 million, “Dennis the Menace”$ 60. 8 million and “In the Line of Fire”$ 60.1 million.

Europeans braved the weather for a bunch of other new releases. “Sleepless in Seattle” drew lots of females in France and was perfect counterprogramming to a televised World Cup soccer game between France and Bulgaria watched by 14 million viewers.

The soccer did take some of the wind out of “Hard Target,” which exhibs said didn’t have the usual oomph of a Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle; they expect it to fade fast. Pic was more robust in Belgium and Switzerland.

“Aladdin” had a superb second week at its Paris showcase, the 2,750-seat Grand Rex, totaling $ 663,100, before rolling out on 450 prints Wednesday.

In Britain, “So I Married an Axe Murderer” made up for some unimpressive performances elsewhere with a pretty good bow. The Mike Myers comedy was well supported by Columbia TriStar and exhibs said the TV campaign was effective.

Launched with the fanfare of a royal charity preem, Mel Gibson’s “The Man Without a Face” looked good, while Mario Van Peebles’ “Posse” rode into the West End at a fair clip. The Michael J. Fox starrer “For Love or Money” was a bust. Beginning a two-week platform at the Odeon Leicester Square, “Aladdin” was huge. In second weekends, “Demolition Man” dipped by 32% and “The Remains of the Day” on four screens was off a mere 9%.

In Germany, “Aladdin” knocked “House of the Spirits” off its perch after four triumphant weeks, while “The Age of Innocence” had a classy bow.

“Rising Sun” dropped by about 30% in its second weekend in Germany and opened with a bang in Mexico ($ 227,500 in four days at 50 houses), the Philippines, Norway and Finland. Its overseas cume climbed to $ 23.4 million.

Philip Kaufman’s thriller widened from 81 to 121 prints in Italy, taking $ 2. 1 million to date. Italo receipts were depressed by snow, which the locals don’t relish, and mayoral elections in several big cities. “Hard Target” collected a so-so $ 251,000 in five days on 37 prints. Nanni Moretti’s “Dear Diary” is gaining must-see status among left-wing filmgoers.

In snow-free Spain, “Aladdin” kicked off with a royal preem and a four-day take of $ 1.2 million on 99 screens, eclipsing “Beauty and the Beast.”

Australian B.O. drifted down a bit to $ 3.02 million. It was one of the worst weeks of the year, said one exhib, noting that kids were preoccupied with exams, and distribs unloaded dross like “Jason Goes to Hell,””Lost in Yonkers,””King of the Hill” and the previous week “Life With Mikey.”
