Worldvision buys ‘Lovers’ for vid

Worldvision Home Video has acquired its first theatrical feature for homevid release: “Lovers,” from Aries Films.

Though the highly acclaimed film is in Spanish, Worldvision marketing veep Gary Delfiner said the company plans to market it “like a mainstream film.”

Plans are to release an unrated version, an R-rated version and, for laserdisc, a letterboxed version.

Approximately 5,000 screeners have been sent to the video trade, and merchandising materials include posters and sell-sheets.

Though Worldvision Home Video has acquired some non-theatrical product in the past, it has relied mainly on parent Spelling Entertainment’s library of TV programming to fill its release schedule.

The award-winning film was directed by Vicente Aranda and stars Victoria Abril.

Vid release will be Feb. 10 at suggested retail price of $ 89.95.
