Pacific Bell improves its vid service

Pacific Bell, a unit of Pacific Telesis Group, unveiled enhancements to its new advanced broadcast video service on Tuesday.

The enhancements will allow cable television companies to select the most appropriate format and carry digitized video and audio over the system.

The advanced broadcast video is a high-speed, fiber-optic-based transmission service for the broadcast and film industries that uses digital telecommunications technology to provide superior motion, color and sound.

The service now provides one-way transmission of monochrome or National Television Systems Committee standard color format video compressed to 45 megabits per second, along with up to four audio channels.

Pacific Bell said it could offer the Moving Pictures Expert Group and High Definition Television formats and other new features as soon as this fall, subject to Public Utilities Commission approval.
