‘Jungle’ blooms, beats ‘Beast’ in o’seas video

After one month in release, “The Jungle Book” has overtaken “Beauty and the Beast” to become the bestselling video of all time in international markets, according to Buena Vista Home Video Intl.

The company has shipped 14 million units to retailers outside North America, with a total store value of $ 350 million.

BVHVI said more than 9 million copies have been snapped up by consumers.

Shipments of “Beauty,” which was released in September, have reached 11 million units, with 8.5 million sold to viewers.

In other stats from BVHVI:

The biggest single territory for “The Jungle Book” is the U.K., where more than 3 million copies have been sold to date — three times more than “Beauty” achieved in its first month. About 4.8 million units have been shipped to British shops.

In Germany, where “The Jungle Book” is the all-time box office champ, more than 3 million units were shipped before the video was officially put on sale to the public, and retailers ordered another 900,000 units during the first month of release. An estimated 2.5 million copies have been sold to date.

France shipped 1.2 million units, and has sold about 70% of them. Italian stores took 900,000 copies, of which 50% have been bought. Consumers in the Benelux countries have bought about 80% of the 908,000 units shipped to date, and 700,000 units have been shipped in Scandinavia, with more than half sold through.

Spain has been more sluggish, with “The Jungle Book’s” sales of 400,000 units still lagging behind “Beauty,” which sold 675,000 units in its first month. In Australia, too, “The Jungle Book” is still coming in second, with shipments of 200,000 units.
