SAG hopeful protests

A complaint filed by Screen Actors Guild presidential candidate De Wayne Williams charging unfair election practices will be heard by the guild’s election committee early next year, SAG sources said.

Williams filed the grievance last month after losing to SAG prexy Barry Gordon in the Nov. 5 election.

He charged SAG with prohibiting the distribution of campaign materials in its New York and Chicago offices.

Williams complained that while the Los Angeles office put out a display table in the lobby for SAG members to view all available literature, the Gotham and Chicago offices refused to allow any materials to be handed out or pinned to bulletin boards.

“Why is it that Chicago and New York, which are branches, prohibit campaign literature distribution, when the national headquarters in Los Angeles allows it?” Williams asked in a letter to SAG before the election, pointing out that nothing in the bylaws prohibits distributing literature in the branches.

He also charged SAG’s Screen Actor member magazine with “engaging in unfair and biased coverage of the current incumbent president while completely deleting the challengers.”

Williams said he does not expect to overturn the election, but he does hope to change the policy for future candidates.
