Law” on NBC had Shelley Berman playing a Yiddish-accented movie studio executive, the stereotypical caricature of Hollywood moguls of years gone by. The Anti-Defamation League received numerous complaints and regional director David A. Lehrer asked exec producer Rick Wallace for a screening of the show. The script contained words such as “bubbies” (for breasts) and “schtupping” (fornicating), etc. And a line by which the character tells of the tragedy of the Kennedy assassination, adding, “Please let the assassin be a gentile”…”Unbelievable” is what returning WGA delegation members who toured refugee camps in Somalia are saying. Some continued on to observe in Croatia and Bosnia. They’ll relate all Dec. 2, at the guild. We spoke with one returnee of the group hosted by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. He’s screenwriter Richard Friedenberg (“A River Runs Through It,” etc.). He says it’s almost impossible to describe the sights they saw “and the odors with which we became familiar, burning garbage and human feces, children lying like rags, too weak to react,” He said “I saw a 14 year-old girl carried to ‘the dead truck’–I have a 14 year-old daughter.” Two of the WGA company came down with malaria. They saw camps with 55,000 refugees, the numbers growing daily. One camp on the Sudan border held 20,000, expected to grow to 100,000. “And only $ 2 a year will inoculate them. The CARE and Red Cross workers are saints.” What will they do? “Tell stories about it. And the best venue is TV. All we can do is ask people to send money.” On the professional side, Friedenberg’s meeting with Roland Joffe and his “River Runs Through It” cohorts Jake Eberts and Robert Redford–for Redford to direct “The Education of Little Tree”

Watching them was–Esther Williams. (She also wrote the book’s foreword). Esther claimed she knew the young swimmers’ mothers! Williams noted, “You have to be stronger to swim pretty (synchronized) than to swim fast.” She observed the Calvin Klein swimwear models who paraded about in the brief swimsuits, and said that her ’93 swimwear line will be “like a piece of wardrobe”–to be worn under blazers, pants suits, etc. “day or night.” Calvin Klein, on hand at the party with his author-wife, was happy birthday-caked on his 50th.
