Police Chief Willie Williams put in a call to Spike Lee to discuss the Nov. 18 bow of “Malcolm X.” The chief’s press office told us, “He (Williams) wants to make sure all runs smoothly and that’s why he wants to link up with him (Lee) so we can have a unified front.” The new chief wants no problems reminiscent of some other movie openings during the tenure of predecessor Daryl Gates … Press agent Jeff Ballard is lucky to be alive after he was shot by three intruders who followed him home (he had a new Jeep Cherokee), beat him and his friend, took the car keys and fired at Ballard as he pressed his alarm panic button. Jeff was hit in the shoulder, the bullet missing a main artery by inches. A femme cop arriving on the scene noted pix of Ballard’s clients including Charlie Sheen. She gave Ballard her card, asked him to get her an autographed picture of Sheen … One hundred carats of diamonds and 50 carats of emeralds–on a necklace, bracelets, ring and earrings–that’s what Tom Arnold gave Roseanne at her birthday (40) bash last Saturday night at the BevHills Crystal Room. She was surprised by more than 400 pals and co-workers. “Roseanne” co-star John Goodman arrived during the Elvis impersonation by Michael Hoover, whom Arnold had flown in from West Virginia. Goodman had been on location in Ventura shooting added scenes for “Matinee,” the U movie he’d completed with Cathy Moriarty for director Joe Dante last June. Among those who performed for Roseanne were Chaka Kahn, Stevie Nicks, Kevin Meaney, and Jackie Diamond who parody-sang “Roseanne Wonderful.” Roseanne’s now taping her 11th seg. Tom’s on his 10th and debuts Dec. 1. They have offers from Columbia for four movies during their hiati … Lana Turner underwent her “big” checkup and according to her daughter, realtor (now at Rodeo Property) Cheryl Crane, “She’s absolutely clear–totally cured. Her doctor made her sign an ‘agreement’ that she would take him and his family along with her and her family on a cruise in 1998!”… Audrey Hepburn’s son Lucca winged in from Europe to be with his hospitalized mom. Hepburn, who was due to leave last weekend, is delayed until this week’s end.

BY THE END OF THE YEAR, Aaron Spelling will have produced 3,000 hours of TV. Next to start is “And the Band Played On” for HBO with Richard Gere, Whoopi Goldberg, Matthew Modine and Anjelica Huston with Roger Spottiswoode directing Arnold Schulman’s script from Randy Shilts’ book …”BevHills, 90210′s” Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green co-host the “Kid’s Choice Awards” Saturday from Universal Studios, airing “live” on Nickelodeon … Tom Sturges is now president of the Chrysalis Music Group. The latest book on his father is “Christmas in July, the Life and Art of Preston Sturges” (UC Press) by Diane Jacobs, who also wrote the Woody Allen book “But We Need the Eggs”… The long line at I. Magnin’s last Saturday afternoon was the 200 who were getting autographed copies of “L.A. Inside Out” (Viking Studio Books) by authors Betty Goodwin and Paddy Calistro and photog Grey Crawford. Barbara Davis, Wendy Goldberg and Joanne Kozberg hostessed the event toasting the artistic book, which looks like a work at MOCA … Roddy McDowall is busily at work on his “Double Exposure–Take IV” (Wm. Morrow) as his “III” edition just hit the bookstalls. Roddy’s books are unique photographic essays accompanied by celeb-written profiles. And McDowall donates all his royalties to the Motion Picture & TV Fund. He continues to be busy, co-starring in “Sands of Time,” the four-hour mini of Sidney Sheldon’s book, plus the big screen “Mirror, Mirror, the Innocent” sequel. And he plays “an odious network hatchet man” in a “Dream On” HBO seg … Over at Le Dome, Jane Stanton Hitchcock was celebrating the optioning of her book, “Trick of the Eye” (Dutton), by Jonathan Axelrod and his Producers Entertainment Group. THE SHOW MUST GO ON–AND ON: The very expectant Beth Grant, who co-stars in “Delta,” completed her scenes Friday afternoon and then rushed to Cedars-Sinai with husband Michael Chieffo. Their first baby, Elizabeth, was born Saturday night … Jennie Garth, another of the hot youngsters in “90210,” completed a fitness video, “Body in Progress” (Strand), which hits the stalls Dec. 10. She stresses keeping fit–and a healthy mind … Monday, Danny De Vito hosts an evening at the Cinegrill for longtime pal, singer-songwriter Nicky Addeo–whose tune “Let’s Make Love Tonight” is also in Danny’s “Hoffa”… Tonight, at West L.A’s Olympic Collection Banquet and Conference Center, celebs’ doodles and art will be auctioned to benefit the Concern Foundation for Cancer Research.
