Lawton joins again with Gary Goldstein producing Lawton’s musical-romance “Indigo Cat” and they want Arnon Milchan to re-team with ’em. Lawton, who also scripted “Pretty Woman,” does not usually do rewrites, but when director Richard Johnson asked him to do so on his (Johnson’s) “Speed Racer” for Joel Silver, Dick Donner and Lauren Shuler-Donner at WB, Lawton agreed–for $ 300,000. Also because he was fond of the cartoon series on which it’s based–when he was a kid. P.S.: He’s added a lot of contemporary high tech stuff … With yesterday’s Nassau County, N.Y., D.A.’s decision to not prosecute Joey Buttafuoco in the famed Amy Fisher “Lethal Lolita” case, director-producer-writer John Herzfeld can now write the final chapter of his CBScript for Tristar–based on the story from Joey’s point of view. Herzfeld talked to an ecstatic Buttafuoco at noon yesterday when the decision was announced. Fisher’s charged with “reckless assault” on Mary Jo Buttafuoco. Herzfeld acknowledges it was a “Hard Copy” tape of Fisher that helped exonerate Joey and sealed Fisher’s fate. “It validates our point of view, ” says filmmaker Herzfeld. What happens to the other nets’ plans to telemovie the yarn?

SMART GIRL: Sara Gilbert is grateful to Roseanne and Tom Arnold and Marcy Carsey–they agreed to let Sara out of her “Roseanne” contract at the end of this season so she (Sara) can enter Yale where, we reported, she was accepted earlier this year. She will, however make appearances on the series when her school sked permits. Sara’s idol, by the way, is Jodie Foster, another Yalie … Fresno native Adrienne Barbeau plays the mother in “The Parsley Garden,” an ABC Weekend Children’s Special filming up north. Coincidentally, Barbeau’s family is also Armenian, like author William Saroyan and director-nephew, Hank S. … Mary Steenburgen joins Jonathan Demme’s “People Like Us” for Tristar … Robert Urich will star in two “Spencer for Hire” movies for ABC Video based on Robert Parker’s novels with Parker also scripting for Alan Wagner’s Boardwalk Prods. … Lee Majors jetted from the Hawaii locations of his “Raven” CBSeries to Ft.
