Review: ‘Howie’

First of four half-hour spex covers segs of Howie Mandel’s onstage act in Anaheim where the Celebrity Theater audience is getting a kick out of watching the comedian’s skits and hearing his observations. Maybe it plays better in Anaheim.

Idea of a free-form comedy exercise is OK, but Mandel’s specialized brand of kidding around needs inside info and a sense of continuity to help the auditor.

Mandel is ingratiating, but the sketches such as a boy in pajamas, a ventriloquist and his dummy (a little person), and a hairstylist are more like samples than complete sketches.

Director Morris Abraham doesn’t do much for pulling the program together for the cameras, but the Mandelphiles in Anaheim eat it up.
