Genesis Entertainment’s high-profile late night talker “The Whoopi Goldberg Show” has become the lowest-rated new major strip of the season in the Nielsen overnight markets.

During the first three days of this week, “Whoopi” scored a 2.0 rating/7 share in 28 markets, finishing below Group W Prods.’ daytime gabber “Vicki!” (2. 5/10 in 24 markets) and Television Program Enterprises’ “Star Search” (2.6/6 in 14 markets).

Despite the poor performance, a Genesis spokesman said itstands behind the talker and expects to see its numbers improve.

Viacom’s “Roseanne” is the leading strip in overnight markets this week, with the off-net sitcom grabbing a 6.1/10 in 26 markets.

It is followed by Twentieth TV’s “Cops” (5.4/10 in seven markets); Warner Bros.’ “Murphy Brown” (5.3/9 in 22 markets); Carsey-Werner Distribution’s “You Bet Your Life” (4.9/11 in 27 markets); Turner Program Services’ “The Wonder Years” (3.9/7 in 24 markets); Columbia Pictures Television Distribution’s “Designing Women” (3.3/9 in 28 markets); MGM’s “In the Heat of the Night” (2.9/8 in 27 markets); Multimedia Entertainment’s “Rush Limbaugh” (2.7/11 in in 27 markets) and companion talk strip “Jerry Springer” (2.6/10 in 22 markets).
