CBS-owned WBBM-TV in Chicago will reportedly drop Paramount’s the “Maury Povich Show” by next season.

The talker, airing at 9 a.m. weekdays, was crushed under the weight of rival WLS-TV’s powerhouse “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

In October, “Oprah” averaged a 12.0 rating/44 share in Nielsen vs. a flat 2.2 /8 for “Povich.”

WBBM is said to be eying a deal that would bring Buena Vista Television’s “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee” to the O&O by next fall, but that could not be confirmed at press time.

“Regis” currently airs at 3:30 a.m. on WLS, the ABC O&O in the nation’s No. 3 TV market.

A Par insider stressed that several Windy City stations have expressed interest in “Povich.”

The source insisted Par is happy that “Povich” will no longer compete against “Oprah.” The syndicator hopes for a repeat of the ratings growth that occurred locally when the show jumped from 3 p.m. on KCBS-TV (appearing against KABC-TV’s “Oprah”) to 1 p.m. on KCAL-TV.
