“Dukes of Hazzard” actor-turned-politician Ben Jones (D-Ga.) is pitching the idea for a sitcom based on the life of a congressman, and he has the right man for the starring role: himself.
The Washington Post reported yesterday that Jones, a two-term congressman defeated in his bid for re-election, is shopping his sitcom to the networks in hopes that one will bite.
Jones played “Cooter” in the “Dukes of Hazzard” series before winning election to Congress in 1988. His new sitcom idea, tentatively entitled “Distinguished Colleagues,” would feature Jones as “good ol’ boy” freshman Democrat whose Capitol Hill office is next door to a “sophisticated widow” appointed to fill her late Republican husband’s congressional seat.
The Post quoted Jones as saying, “I’m the first professional actor to go and serve in the House and then return to show business–if you assume I ever left it.”
