Cathy Creany, a key player in the recent battle between CBS and its affiliate board, has been named VP and general manager at WFAA-TV, the A.H. Belo Corp.-owned ABC affiliate in Dallas.

Creany will assume her new role on Feb. 1.

She is replacing David Lane, who was recently named president of the A.H. Belo broadcast division.

Broadcasters leader

Currently, Creany is VP and general manager of Meredith Broadcasting-owned WTVH-TV Syracuse, N.Y., and the chair-elect of the CBS Television Affiliates Association. She is also president of the New York State Broadcast Association.

The executive joined Meredith in 1976 as a film editor at KPHO-Phoenix and has held a series of positions. She moved to WTVH in 1980 as a news photographer/reporter. She became VP and general manager in 1986.

At WTVH Creany became a key player in CBS’ battle with its affiliates over compensation.

She and other top executives representing the affiliates were able to convince CBS to retreat on many key provisions of what would have been a costly compensation program.
