Birnbaum sticks with Roth

Twentieth Century Fox production prexy Roger Birnbaum is expected to join his former boss Joe Roth as a producing partner in his new indie endeavor at Disney, pending the blessing of News Corp. topper Rupert Murdoch.

Fox may grant Birnbaum early release from his contract–which still has a year to go–as soon as today.

Exec VP Tom Jacobson is expected to succeed Birnbaum in the post.

While Birnbaum and newly appointed movie chairman Peter Chernin reportedly met yesterday to discuss the former’s desire to leave, Murdoch still needs to sign off on the move, which is expected today.

Sources close to the situation say in a deal with Roth, Birnbaum would get a guaranteed fee and piece of the backend.
