‘Long Day,’ ‘Leolo’ top Valladolid

The 37th Valladolid Intl. Film Festival, which ended Oct. 31, proved once again to be one of the best organized and most interesting of the non-FIAPF European fests.

In spite of the general quality of the festival, especially in a year unanimously declared to be rather weak in film production, the decisions for both the best picture and special jury award were booed heavily at the closing ceremonies.

The international jury awarded the Golden Spike for best picture jointly to “The Long Day Closes” by British director Terence Davies and “Leolo,” a French/Canadian production directed by Jean-Claude Lauzon. The public, more so than the critics, openly expressed its displeasure with the choice of “The Long Day Closes.”

The special jury prize went to Spanish film “Estacion de Paso” (Whistlestop), directed by newcomer Gracia Querejeta.

The complete list of prizes is as follows:

Golden Spike for best picture (tie):”Leolo,” Jean-Claude Lauzon (Canada/France), and “The Long Day Closes,” Terence Davies (U.K.)

Silver Spike: “Daens,” Stijn Coninx (Belgium).

Special Jury Award: “Estacion de Paso” (Whistlestop), Gracia Querejeta (Spain).

Best New Director: Susanne Bier, “Freud Flyttar Hemifran” (Sweden).
