Variety publisher Gerry Byrne has been appointed to the newly created position of vice president/director of publishing operations for both Daily Variety and Variety, part of a strategic plan to enhance both publications’ positions with readers and advertisers.
Effective immediately, Byrne will be responsible for all sales, marketing and new product development for both Daily Variety and Variety.
To make the most effective use of its advertising staff, the two publications have formed a national account sales team. Based in L.A., the group will focus on marketing both publications to key entertainment and media companies.
In addition, Variety Inc. editorial director Peter Bart has been named a vice president. He will continue to preside over all editorial matters for Daily Variety and Variety.
Both positions will report to Neil Perlman, senior vice president and group publisher of the Cahners Entertainment Group, a unit of Reed Publishing (USA).
Daily Variety publisher Michael Silverman has been offered the position of vice president/manufacturing and distribution for the Cahners Entertainment Group, which includes Daily Variety, Variety, Broadcasting and Broadcasting Abroad.
In the newly created position, Silverman would be in charge of computer systems, automated classified ad systems, typesetting, press activities and related activities. With the transfer of responsibilities, the title of publisher at both papers has been eliminated.
Commenting on the changes, Perlman said, “We are fortunate to have the key executive talent in place to lead our strategic plan for continued growth at both Daily Variety and Variety. These changes have been designed to enhance the positions of our publications among our readers and advertisers and to assure we gain full market value from our preeminence, size and resources.”
