La Jolla gets Sondheim tuner

Coming off the recent Broadway-bound success of “Tommy,” the La Jolla Playhouse has nabbed another coup with the world premiere next season of a musical from Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.

The tuner, still untitled, marks the second time Sondheim and Lapine premiered a work at La Jolla, the first being the 1985 revised version of “Merrily We Roll Along,” followed by “Into the Woods.”

Sondheim and Lapine have previously collaborated on “Woods” and the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Sunday in the Park With George.”

It’s not known when the new musical will run, since the Playhouse artistic staff is still putting together the 1993 season. The season announcement will be made in January.
