Roos spec script ‘Boys’ sides with New Regency

Arnon Milchan’s New Regency Prods. has acquired Don Roos’ latest spec script “Boys on the Side” for $ 500,000.

Roos’ prior projects include “Single White Female” and “Love Field,” an unreleased Orion pic starring Michelle Pfeiffer and directed by Jonathan Kaplan.

New Regency president Steven Reuther confirmed the purchase of the “bittersweet tale” about the travails of three women, left by the wayside of contemporary culture, who form a new type of American family. Although the trio of strangers end up trekking across the country together, the story looms much larger than any road movie.

Roos said he will executive produce with his partner Patricia Karlan. They’re working on another film for Warner Bros.–“The Answer Man,” a thriller penned by Roy Johansen.

Reuther declined to disclose “Boys” details, but confirmed, “We bought the screenplay because it’s a truly wonderful story. Right now we’re trying to package it.”

Roos was elated over selling “Boys” to Milchan. “I started writing it at the end of April and finished it at the end of September. We really had just started to take it out to the marketplace when New Regency picked it up.”

The project is the second New Regency has acquired in a week, spending a total of nearly $ 3 million. The company reportedly paid between $ 2.25 million and $ 5 million for John Grisham’s latest tome “The Client” (Daily Variety, Oct. 13).
