‘Bodyguard’ big, ‘Alone’ at home at overseas B.O.

“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” and “The Bodyguard” have begun their foreign excursions with uniformly smashing results.

Among other debutantes, “Death Becomes Her” turned plenty of heads in Japan and the U.K.; “Sister Act” soared heavenward in Spain; and “Beauty and the Beast” did monster biz in Italy.

Boosted by a four-day weekend, the box office in Spain was hotter than chili peppers as the “Home Alone” sequel garnered $ 2.2 million in six days on 115 prints, nearly 200% up on its predecessor, which launched on 70 screens.

Buena Vista braved the “Home Alone” onslaught in Spain with “Sister Act” and was rewarded with $ 954,000 on 71 screens. After two weeks, “Beauty and the Beast” has pocketed $ 4.5 million on 80 and “The Last of the Mohicans” has $ 1.7 million after broadening from 44 to 80.

“The Bodyguard” muscled into Japan with $ 1.9 million in the first weekend at 121 theaters, the third-best opening there for Warner Bros. after “Batman” and “Cocktail.”

In Japan, UIP squared off against “Bodyguard” with “Death Becomes Her” on 71 screens, garnering a splendid $ 2 million and change, and “Beethoven,” which notched a fair $ 806,400 on 69 sites, both in six days.

“Husbands and Wives” preemed just short of $ 1 million at 107 French situations, rated by exhibs as very good, though not exceptional, in a territory where Woody Allen is king.
