Disney’s animated smash “Beauty and the Beast” set a house record at the Odeon West End 2 Theater in London during its debut weekend with T45,868 ($ 78, 140), surpassing the mark set by “The Addams Family” with T43,192 ($ 73,581).
“Beauty,” distributed abroad by Buena Vista Intl., goes wide in the U.K. today, with 336 prints working.
“Beauty” also has bowed in Scotland, grossing T89,610 ($ 152,658) in its first weekend on 25 screens. That easily toppled the mark set by Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” for best opening weekend of a new animated pic in Scotland; “Mermaid” scored T26,249 ($ 44,717) at the same number of houses in 1990.
Japanese coffers are overflowing as “Beauty” has pulled in 938,373,650 yen ($ 7,759,643) in 102 sites during its first three weeks. After opening in the number-one slot in Japan, it was elbowed into second by the debuting “Lethal Weapon 3,” then regained first in its third week.
