KRON-TV is trying an end run on a 10 p.m. news show after failing in previous frontal assaults. In addition to its own 11 p.m. news, the NBC outlet now will produce an earlier evening news hour on indie KOFY-TV, which is abandoning its own news effort at that time. Replacement, prepared by the KRON staff and using KRON anchors, will start airing next month.
Even before KTVU-TV took the nighttime news lead with a 10 p.m. show, KRON argued that the earlier time was better. But it has not been able to convince the network, and an experiment with its own 10 p.m. news immediately following the 1989 San Francisco earthquake was a miserable failure.
