NBC fanned the finsyn flames last week by claiming that more than 80% of outside-produced shows on the Big Three and Fox are being supplied by eight major studios. Moreover, nearly 40% of the pilots are supplied by studios that are foreign-owned, said NBC.
“The trend toward studio consolidation of primetime tv is clearly escalating,” said NBC exec veepee Richard Cotton. Motion Picture Assn. of America prez Jack Valenti called the new NBC study a “modern day revision of Alice in Wonderland.” Valenti said NBC “ought to take all of their last four or five press releases and make a sitcom. They’d probably be more successful than the shows they have now.”
