In a pay-per-view first, NBC Sports will be heavily involved in the June 3 light heavyweight championship fight between Virgil Hill and Thomas Hearns.
Projections have the fight in more than 15 million cable households via both addressability and traps. It’s also expected to generate a 4% buy-rate at a retail price of $29.95, for a potential p-p-v gross of $18 million (not counting exhibition in some 500 closed-circuit venues).
NBC’s agreement is with the Forum in Inglewood, N.J., which is co-promoting the fight with Caesars Palace. Don Ebert, director of program development for Forum Boxing, says the promotion, which will include a media buy of tv spots on NBC, has a value in excess of $2.5 mil.
