After little more than a year in office as director of the Television Program Fund at the Corp. for Public Broadcasting, Donald L. Marbury is administering two PBS firsts.

He is overseeing the simultaneous translation to Spanish of “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” (NewsHour/En Espanol), available in 36 markets, including L.A., N.Y. and Wash., D.C.

The service, tested by pubcasters in 25 markets last September, began Jan. 14.

Marbury also is involved in establishing new procedures for doling out TV Program Fund grants, including content-specific guidelines for solicitations.

The first solicitation, which has a March 1 deadline, requests script proposals for contemporary miniseries reflecting the cultural diversity in the U.S.

In addition, the fund is formalizing the process under which unsolicited proposals are received. An undetermined amount of money (not less than $1 million) will be set aside for General Program Review, which is open to producers and projects that do not fit the content-specific guidelines. Producers in this category will be able to submit ideas on a quarterly basis.
