A state Assembly panel in Sacramento, Calif. unanimously approved a proposal April 23 that would order the warden at San Quentin to allow televised coverage of executions.

As reported by Associated Press, Assemblyman John Burton (D-San Francisco) a death penalty foe, told the Assembly Public Safety Committee that supporters of capital punishment should support the bill if they really want executions to be a deterrent, and opponents should support it to bolster their arguments against the death penalty.

Burton’s bill would require the permission of the defendant.
