Age-Old Controversy

Four former reporters for NBC affiliate KYW-TV are suing the station’s owner, Group W, for age discrimination, according to a suit filed in federal court.

The four maintain that management fired them so that they could be replaced with younger reporters in the hope of boosting the ratings of KYW, which was in last place in the ratings. They seek back pay, damages and legal fees.

Plaintiffs in the suit are: Abdul-Brahin Ahmaddiya, fired in 1990 at age 47; Judi Barton, fired in 1988 at 44; Kate Larson, fired in 1985 at 40; and Mike Strug, fired in 1986 at 46.

Of the four, only Strug and Barton still do tv work, as free-lancers.
