TVNZ Cuts Violent Programs; Says Others Should Too

Following moves by New Zealand pubcaster TVNZ to reduce violent programming, watchdog Broadcasting Standards Authority has called for more reductions from N.Z.’s two commercial networks.

TVNZ recently dropped “Superstars Of Wrestling,” which ran at 11 p.m. Saturdays, and has withdrawn “Booker” and “Top Cop” from the weeknight slots, to be rescheduled.

BSA chairman Iain Gallaway has welcomed the moves but said more drastic measure are needed.- TVNZ chief Julian Mounter has urged private rival TV3 to join him in reducing small-screen violence. TV3 spokesman Wilson Own told him to mind his own business and said TV3 soon would discuss with Gallaway what positive steps the web was taking to reduce violence.
