Packer Hits Snag In Renewing Nine’s Licenses

Kerry Packer’s bid to renew the Nine Network’s licenses has hit a snag because the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal has refused to validate the web’s flagship station, TCN-9 Sydney. The ABT says it is not in a position to give Packer the nod because of possible violations of cross-ownership regs. The Melbourne outlet, GTV-9, however, has been renewed for five more years.

The problem stems from the ownership of Sydney radio station 2UE. The Broadcasting Act prohibits individuals from more than 15% cross-ownership in media in any major city. A bid by Packer to restructure his ownership of 2UE is under consideration by the ABT.
