As things stand now, there will be two festivals called Mystfest next summer – both dedicated to different aspects of the mystery/thriller genre. But which is the “real” Mystfest?
The traditional Mystfest will relocate to Viareggio this summer (same staff, same format) because of disagreements with former host city Cattolica, according to fest director Giorgio Gosetti. Dates are June 22 to 29.
Another mystery/thriller festival will take place in Cattolica under newly appointed fest topper Gian Piero Brunetta, who will “modernize” the traditional formula by exploring the different facets of mystery. Brunetta said he would like to include a panel, for example, discussing the practice of magic in northern Italy. Cattolica dates are June 29 to July 6 (same as last year’s fest).
The Viareggio Mystfest will offer its usual competing section, with 14 or 15 films; a section of midnight premieres; and a conference on aspects of mystery and thrillers in world cinema and literature. Gosetti said this year’s emphasis will not be on horror but on action and suspense.
