La Sept, ARD Link On Culture Channel

High-brow Gallic web La Sept and Germany’s ARD last week created what they hope will be Europe’s first cultural network.

ARTE will start broadcasting into France and Germany next year on a $210 million budget.

Per La Sept topper Jerome Clement, who’ll also head the new web, German viewers will pick up programs through the country’s highly developed cable system. In France, where the cable industry still is in its infancy, Clement is hoping the government will grant the network an over-the-air frequency.

ARTE topper Willibald Hilf says what will be offered is “a high-level program… ambitious for itself and its public.”
