Thesp Jane Russell, honored guest of the Berlinale for the retro section of some of her pics, was tracing her family genealogy in Germany. Her great-great grandfather, Otto Reinhold Jacobi, was a w.k. artist in the Vaterland before emigrating to Canada.

Christian Pheline, deputy general director of the Centre National de la Cinematographie Francaise, bestowed the distinction Chevalier des Arts et Lettres on Berlin Market supremo Beki Probst. In another ceremony at the Italian film folks’ party, Berlin producer Horst Wendlandt received the honor Knight of the Italian Republic from Luciano Rebulla from the Italian Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment.

Bertelsmann, Germany’s giant media complex, has announced plans to build a 100 million mark ($6.6 million) Media Center in Berlin’s eastern section. Center, to be sprawled over some 4,000 square yards, will have radio and tv studios, and editorial offices, plus a cinema and shopping facilities.
