Tv’s future in the five new German states is beginning to become clear and, as predicted, states will team up to back new pubcasters.
Two of the new stations already have been defined. The states of Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringen will broadcast together out of the southern part of what was East Germany, and Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will seize the airways of the north. The groups also will have their own radio stations. According to German law, each German state gets a representative pubcaster.
Questions still abound: whether DFF, the old East German pubcaster newly dubbed Neue Lander Kette, will survive; what will happen to RIAS, the station founded by the Yanks in Berlin; and whether SFB, Berlin’s current pubcaster, will be restructured.
The tri-state media web in Berlin isn’t even sure where it will roost – Berlin, or somewhere in the DEFA studios.
