War Buzzings

From under a table in a hotel in Baghdad, CNN anchor Bernard Shaw and his comrades put other network anchors under the table last week when war broke out. Interesting to note that Shaw, who gave feeds to NBC, makes less than one-third the million dollar-plus salaries of Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings, who were safe in their New York offices. . . Most of the usually buoyant parties at NATPE were subdued by war. King World, for example, cancelled performances by the Four Tops. The Tribune Co. party went on as skedded, with a perf by Jerry Lee Lewis. Geraldo Rivera, whose show is syndicated by Tribune, made a strange announcement to partygoers. Acknowledging that it was an awkward time for a bash, Rivera excitedly told the crowd the initial attack was a success, “So let’s party!”… While movie screenings had already begun in Manhattan last Wednesday when war broke out, LA. pic companies had differing reactions. A screening of “Julia Has Two Lovers” was cancelled. Triton’s “Meet The Applegates” had two screenings which did go as planned. The second was at the UCLA Film School, and when a packed house materialized, director Michael Lehmann asked the crowd: “What are you doing here?”
