Recording Industry Assn. of America prez Jason Berman told Congress last week that the RIAA supports a free trade agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but he warned that Mexico must do more to support copyright reforms.
According to Berman, U.S. diskeries lose about $75 million a year on piracy in Mexico, and sound recordings are not protected under Mexican copyright law. However, he noted that Mexico has indicated an intent to pass legislation protecting recordings as early as this spring.
Berman also warned against extending Canada’s “cultural exemption” in the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement to the proposed three-country agreement.
