Lensers Honor Billy

When 200 American Society of Cinematographers members and guests turned out Jan. 19 to salute Billy Wilder at the organization’s annual award dinner, the eminent helmer returned the honor by hailing three cameramen as the “mainstays” of his career: Joseph LaShelle, John Seitz and Charles Lang Jr.

Taking the podium at the Bel Air Country Club event (which lenser Lang attended), Wilder said that his recent preoccupation with tv coverage of the Gulf War kept him from writing a speech.

Telegrammed greetings came from Jack Lemmon, who worked with Wilder in seven of his films, and Directors Guild of America prez Arthur Hiller.
