Cahners Publishing Co., parent of VARIETY, acquired the trade publications This Week In Consumer Electronics (known as TWICE), CARS and TWICE Today from Viare Publishing. Cahners paid $5 to $6 million for the publications.
Plans are to fold CARS, which covers the mobile electronics industry, into TWICE.
TWICE commenced weekly publication in September 1986 and, with 45,000 subscribers, has become the leading trade publication in the consumer electronics industry. Most of its subscribers are consumer electronics retailers, video rental stores and mass merchants.
Publisher and Viare owner Richard Ekstract launched TWICE Today in January 1990 as a daily at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Ekstract will serve as a consultant to Cahners. He retains and will continue to publish Video Review magazine independently.
Previously, Ekstract started the trade magazines Consumer Electronics Monthly, Consumer Electronics Show Daily, Video Business, Audio Times and Auto-sound & Communications, which he sold to International Thomson Retail Press in the early 1980s for an estimated $11 million.
